About the Event
Hey team, we’re rested, tanned and back ready to pick up where we left off in June. Cheers to all those who came down to the Day Party and Minor Science/Peach, we had a right laugh. But now its heads down as we’re joined by UK dance music royalty Pearson Sound and Oxford old-girl and SIREN head-honcho, Sibyl. HWG HWG !
~ Pearson Sound (Hessle Audio)
As one-third of the foundational dubstep-techno label Hessle Audio, Pearson Sound has been at the forefront of the ever-changing UK dance music scene for over ten years. Between 2007-11, Hessle Audio, alongside other important imprints such as Hemlock, 2nd Drop Records, and Soul Jazz, took the british underground sounds of the early 00s – dubstep, UK Garage, grime etc – and morphed them into a mutant, hybrid sound that also had a strong techno and rave focus. This post-dubstep sound, as championed by the likes of Joy Orbison, Untold, Goodness alumnus Joe and indeed Pearson Sound (esp. in his earlier Ramadanman alias) served to be a major turning point in the progression of the UK dance music continuum.
Since its humble origins as a Leeds-based radio show and party, Hessle Audio has since become one of dance music’s most revered labels, with a forty-strong back catalogue of singles and albums that lacks real filler. As a producer, Pearson Sound has evolved over the years to adapt his more dubstep-focused sound to a more techno-centric one as fashions have changed, though early and recent releases are still connected by a masterful approach to drum programming and an intense attention to detail. His DJ approach tends to embody the Hessle Audio ethos, with a strong emphasis on subculture and multi-genre mixing. If you haven’t seen him already, you simply gotta
~ Sybil (SIREN)
Part of the London-based SIREN collective, the depth and strength of Sybil’s selections have made her perhaps our most underrated DJ in the UK techno scene today; combine that with intricate and intelligent mixing and you have a guaranteed party winner. Previously having brought support to the likes of Laurel Halo, DJ Stingray, UMFANG, Objekt and more, she is well-equipped to smash it.
The SIREN collective serves to “challenge and re-define current preconceptions within dance music”, whislt providing a platform for underrepresented DJs and producers within the scene. Starting out as a London-based queer party promoting female* and non-binary artists, their movements have since expanded into an awesome zine and show on NTS Radio, whilst they continue to take their expansive techno sound to other parties worldwide. As many of you will be aware, licensing challenges and potential closure faced by Cellar have meant that we’ve had to find a new space to hold this party at. The newly-refurbished basement at Emporium is the result, and hopefully we will be returning to Frewin Court later on in the year. It will be dark, smokey and hopefully banging. Make sure you bring the party!
